• However, when such a vacuum source is used, a filter f1asF;
or similar water trap should be installed in the vacuum line
between the engine and the sampler. After the sample has
been ta4;en, the sampler sonde should be disassembled and
cleaned, including a final rinse with distilled water. The
Sinco unit is easily disassembled for cleaning. The well
purging procedure is normally sufficient to flush the
sampler tubing as the fluid passing through the tubing
during the purging operation ultimately represents the fluid
to be sampled. As the sample sites are not far from the
mill's analytical laboratory, the filtration of these
samples can be performed in the lab at much greater
efficiency than in the field, providing that the sample is
filtered within 24 hours after collection. As such the
ground water samples can be collected in one gallon
polyethylene containers in the field and transported to the
lab. Two gallons should be a sufficient quantity from each
site. The gallon-size field sample containers can be reused
provided they are properly washed and rinsed with acidified
and plain distilled water. Surface water samples can be
collected directly into the containers used for preservation
and shipment.
The water temperature, pH and conductivity of the sample
should be measured and recorded at the time of sampling.
• Quality portable instruments for this purpose are available
from Cole Parmer Instrument Company as well as other
suppliers. We recommend the Cole Parmer Model R-1481-50
Conductivity meter with probe and Model R-5994-00 LCD pH
Meter kit. Both units with a supply of Conductivity meter
calibrating solution would cost appror.imately $450.
The water levels should 6e measured in each well prior to
purging the stagnant casing fluid as this represents the
static water level at equilibrium. The Cisco Model WL-300
M-Scope Water Level Indicator has been a very popular unit,
costing appro:;imately X200. This model can measure to depths
of 300 feet. Measurement should be to the nearest, O.DS feet.
The water level measurements at the specified surface water
sites can be obtained 6y installing a graduated staff in the
pond and detemining the index, elevation by leveling
procedures. A section of cloth or fiber glass engineer's
tape can be nailed to the staff for to provide the
graduations.
Sample filtration should be performed with paper suited far
finely crystalline precipitates (EPA specifies 45 micron
opening) such as Whatman No. 5 and using Buchner funnels and
1000 ml or larger filter flasks. The recommended filter size

-27-
