There are many varieties of Finch as well as different kinds of
Sv+allows that nest here. i~;any psirs of I•It. Blue Birds return each year
to hatch and rear their young. Each summer the ltumtning birds are every-
where on these hills. I have also seen Thrush and many others I cannot
identify. At about 1 ;30 to 2;30 F-.t~1, almost any sum+cer afternoon, vre
have watched a pair of Golden Eagles that soar on tine warm thermal air
currents above. Last year v+e watched them coach their young to fly, The
Gunnison Valley and the small creek beds close by are so,.,e of the very fev+
exfisting i:esting areas left for the Great Blue Heron. I have seen many
of these large gracefull birds flying over this land, The noise and
pollution of the air, this proposed plant will cause, vrill put an end to
the Bird-life that e:c~ists here now,
Another concern is the erosion of land, a large scale operation vrould
cause. This land around Gunnison is like an Artic tundra vrhere the grow-
ing season is short. It takes rn~rny years to replace any foliage and
undergroevth. Because of the short growing season, it takes more years to
grow a tree to deter ground erosion,
The spring run off v,aters vrash down over these hills in a natural
way now, into the Antelope Creek.. Gouging tlis fragile land for Sand ;~
Gravel •:rill reurove much that can never be replaced. I believe once the
pit is estaulished, the operation will grovr year after year. I believe
it will destabilize the lower portion of these hills that slope into the
Gunnison river farther belovr. This to roe is a very important point. I
would seriously fear eventual r~ud slides, In years to come even shifting
and movement of the lower sections may be a possiblity.
In the lust 15 yrs, there have been homes built on these lower
sections. I think the lives of these people will be effected greatly by
the mud ar_d water run off, The devaluation of their property trill be
immediate, to say nothing of the dust, noise, aand heavy truck traffic t~-rey
vrill h.:ve to endure,
:,ven tho these people and tlleir property would be so effected, they
vrere not notified by letter. So unless they happeneu to have read the
particular astical in the local news paper they still may not realize
what might happen to their lives and property.
I aslc your as board members to consider the grave consequences to
all of the lives effected by your vote of permission to the Gravel Pit Co,
If vre roust be burdened with this pit and pollution, can there be
very strong provisions enforced? Schmalz Construction Ltd, should be
regulated closely for the destruction of the foothills, the air Pollution
of the valley, and the environmental habitat for the wildlife, The plant-
ing of trees and foliage would help deter the erosion of the land.
govever if these plants do not live, the habitat for the wildlife vrould
not be replaced. You kno;, they could never replace the mountain as it is,
In closing ::ray I say, people from around the vrould coure here to enjoy
this land -x,u^,7 feQ1 we, as concerned people, must also protect it for the
future, wildlife
Respectfully yours,
~~ ~~~ ~~~
