File ;!I~i-$4-069
llear :Ir. i~iark Loye:
- This letter is in response to a notice received by us Piay 17, 1984•
ATotice ~~ 7342 dated 1.1ay, 15, 19$4 states, the Schmalz Construction Ltd.
has ap~•lied for a permit to construct a Sand F,: Gravel Fit on property
located on county Rd. 17 Gunnison, Co. I am informed this property
site is adjacent to our southern property line.
In our opinion there could not be a vaorse place to put a Sand &
Gravel Pit.
It is our opinion that there could be detriiaental effects on the
enviroruuent, land erosion, and land values in the area. Our land erith
all improvements is estimated at }j150,000.00, vrhich vaould definately
depreciate greatly.
This proposed site of operation is on the foothills of i.cIntosh
i•iountain, Located on the c+estern edge of the city of Gunnison~in time
it will be in full view; of every one coming into the valley, from the
east, on highvray „~ 50. The pollution from a plant operation such as this
including Asphalt production, erould settle in tiie valley. The scar of an
open pit, and tl:e eventual erosion of the land cvill be an eye some from
everyv:here in the valley.
Putting the land values aside for a moment, an even greater impact
vrill be felt by tl.e ti:~ildlife envirormrent. This land supports Elk and Deer
during the ver~~ harsh v:inters on i;cIntosh Init. The elk and deer are forced
down onto these lovrer foothills to survive. They search for food, shelter,
and protection here.
In early i•iay ere stood on our back porch and v~atched a heard of 15
Nlule Deer does grazing, not a quarter of a rule away. There they were so
beautiful, each seez.red to be full •::ith a spring Fawn soon to be born.
They are a sily animal, frighteneo and stressed by noise and machinery.
These hills have been theirs for centuries. I urge you to please consider
the impact of the noise and complete destruction of the v+ildlifes~ vrinter
food grovrth.
Throu;hout the year many animals are seen here. Plot only elk & deer,
but coyote, rabbit, even badgers and an occasional bear have been sighted
in the close vicinity.
The vrild bird life is abundent here also. Each year they nest in the
sage brush. .;e have observed flocks of Sage Grouse hens nesting in the
area just wrest of the gully v+here the Schmalz Co, has already started
operation.
