Sowards,
In regard to your request dated July 11 and seeking informa-
tion on t•~inter wheat yield data and fertilization of winter wheat,
both soils and yields of winter wheat are highly variable in Ploffat
County and precise data is difficult for any particular field with-
out soil tests and longtime yield data fora particular farm.
• County averages for wheat are about 22.4 bushel per acre. Yields
maV vary frc•^. abo!It 32 pl:.= by-~:C 1.', '~- ....'."a T1J0 ycsr' ugJ, ,.Gc(.
drought eras a factor, yields t:~ere 10 bushel per acre and lot•rer. About
22 bushel per acre is a fair average. lJeather, the farm operator and,
from time to time, the diseases Dt•rar•f Bunt. Snow Mold and others will
influence both yield and quality.
Normally our soils are low in both nitrogen and phosphorus but
are extremely variable. ldithout a soil test, any recommendation is
a pure guess. And, even with a soil test, moisture conditions will
greatly influence yields and response especially to nitrogen. On a
dry year fertilization, especially t~;ith nitrogen, can depress yields.
I am enclosing a C.S.U. soil test form and bag for sending in a soil
test. Contact me if you have questions.
As a general recommendation it has been determined that 30 to
40 pounds of available nitrogen per• acre has been profitable most
years for fertilizing o-+inter wheat in Colorado. Results from fer-
tilizing with phosphate have been snore Highly variable and for this
reason our best guess, witlicut a 5011 test, is to recommend nitrogen
fertilizer only as the aforementioned rate.
Very truly yours,--,L-.
• Dick Flartin
County Extension Director
enclosures F-4
OM:fh
Colorado State Univrrsrty.
