UN;TED STATES DEPARTMENT dF AGRICULTURE
SOIL GONSERVATIOnJ SERVICE
C~
356 Ranney Siree[, Craig, Colorado R1625
July 17, 1979
Mr. i~e}•ne E. Sowards
Senior environmental Engineer, Utah International, Inc.
Post Office Box 1R7
Craig, Colorado 51625
Deer ilayne:
This correspondence is in reference to your letter of July 11, 1979,
i
•'
I find that the average winter wheat yield for itofiat County is 22.4
bushels per acre. The yield that is most commonly found on T6N, R911l,
Sec. 33, S= is 32 ~ushels per acre. This is attributed to [he fact
you have fair moisture in this area, and [hat P.oss Evans and Bob Barnes
are better than average Carters. I would say 32 bushel/acre is a good
yield for this particular area. A poor year could produce 12 bushel/acre
or no bushel to the acre in case of hail. damage. An average year would
p~e~tuce the county average or a~ouud 25 iuahel co the acre.
I do not have snecific data on how much minter ~,•heat a specific soil such
as 61D r~oitld produce. This harvest season and coming :rioter will be spent
in compiling soil tyre-crop yield data. t-0}• deadline fcr completion !s
t4arch 31, 1980. I hope this information can help you.
As for an optimum fertilization rate I'm not goinn to say. Each piece
of ground is different so you recd specific fertilization rules for best
results. A soil analysis is nvailable through Colorado State Cniversity
fat a norntnal fee. Contact Uick P?actin, county extension agent, for more
information about the oroEram. Ile is located in the Courthouse or can be
reached at 824-6673. I am conCldent that the analysis will reflect the
optimum rate.
h'e thanl: you for this opportunity [o serve you. Feel free to call or write
any time. Tlie Colorado First Soil Conservation District and the Soil
Conservation Service supports your reclamation efforts.
•
Sincerely,
Nilliam Lee hill, District Conservationist
SCS, Craig, Colorado
`~~
~L~sI%
HLli:ce
F-3
S
4
