HazeltinelROad Runners Rest II/Brinkmann-Woodward Gravel Pits Lining Project-Design Technical Memorandum
Denver Water
August 2003
1.3 Authorization
GEI performed the work described in this TM under the terms and conditions of Agreement
07146A, entered March 5, 2003 between GEI and the City and County of Denver, a municipal
corporation of the State of Colorado, acting by and through its Board of Water Commissioners.
1.4 Project Personnel
Personnel from GEI responsible for the completion of this work included:
Project Manager Robert J. Huzjak, P.E.
Project Geotechnical Engineer Iqbal Ahmed, P.E.lii, Ph.D.
Staff Geotechnical Engineer Edwin R. Friend, E.LT.
Review Joseph M. Green-Heffern, P.E.
Note:
1. Licensed in states other than Colorado
1.5 Background
The Hazeltine, Road Runners Rest II, and Brinkmann-Woodward Gravel Pits (Site) are located
between Old Brighton Road and the South Platte River from about 112`h Avenue to 120`h
Avenue. The general location of the project is shown on Figure 1.1. Denver Water was
originally planning to convert two of these pits, the Hazeltine and Road Runners Rest II Gravel
Pits, into lined water storage facilities. GEI has been conducting geotechnical explorations and
feasibility work since 1998 to support Denver Water in this project. Recently Denver Water
added the Brinkmann-Woodward Gravel Pit to the project.
Adams County is planning upgrades to 120`h Avenue. As part of these upgrades, 120th Avenue
will be realigned to cross the South Platte River along the northem edge of the Road Runners
Rest II Gravel Pit, and a new road embankment will be constructed along the northern edge of
Road Runners Rest II Gravel Pit and across the adjacent Brinkmann-Woodward Gravel Pit. It
is anticipated that the roadway construction will begin around December 2003. Denver Water
intends to construct asoil-bentonite cutoff wall around the perimeter of the Hazeltine, Road
Runners Rest II, and Brinkman-Woodward Gravel Pits prior to commencement of the 120`k
Avenue upgrades.
Engineering evaluations, design, and construction of stable reservoir side slopes and water
conveyance facilities will be performed in future phases of the project.
The engineering analyses for this phase of the project is limited to design of the soil-bentonite
cutoff wall.
GEI CODSUItan[S, Ine. 2 o?oso o?-o.-?i in-Huaunc nas;gn t.N
