HazeltinelROad Runners Rest II/Brinkmann-Woodward Gravel Pits Lining Project -Design Technical Memorandum
Denver Water
August 2003
Section 1 -Introduction
1.1 Purpose and Objective
The purposes of this technical memorandum are to present the results of our engineering
analyses and basis of design for construction of asoil-bentonite cutoff wall around the
combined perimeter of the Hazeltine, Road Runners Rest II, and Brinkmann-Woodward gravel
pits in Adams County, Colorado.
The objective of the project is to construct a below grade, lined water storage reservoir that
meets the State Engineer guidelines for lining criteria for gravel pits. This report presents the
results of our seepage and slope stability analyses and our professional conclusions and
recommendations regarding lining of the reservoir.
1.2 Scope of Work
GEI Consultants, lnc.'s (GEI) scope of this work included analysis and design of a soil-
bentonite cutoff wall and did not include analysis for long-term operations, water conveyance,
or penetrations of the cutoff wall. GEI performed the following services for this phase of the
project:
1. Evaluated the data collected and described in the Geotechnical Data Technical
Memorandum (GEI, 2000) and the Addendum to Geotechnical Data Technical
Memorandum (GEI, 2003).
2. Performed two-dimensional slope stability analyses of reservoir side slope
configurations to support selection of the alignment of the soil-bentonite cutoff wall
and to identify areas where slope modifications are necessary.
3. Performed two-dimensional seepage analyses to design the depth into bedrock of the
soil-bentonite cutoff wall.
4. Prepared this technical memorandum (TM) that presents the results of our analyses and
basis of design.
GEI Consultants, Inc. 1 osoeo o?-o~-n i,~.u~rro,~ri~;,~rm
