1. Strip transect censuses for rassasine birds and upland game birds
2. Ground surveys to determine the presence and status of raptor nests
•
3. Surveys of wet areas to determine presence and abundance of waterfowl
and shorebirds
4. Waterfowl and upland game bird brood production surveys
In addition to the above-listed specific census techniques, opportunistic
sightings of raptorial birds, game birds, and waterfowl were recorded
by species, habitat type, and location on wildlife observation forms during
all field activities.
Passerine Birds. Passerine birds were censused along transect lines placed
within each of the following major vegetation types on the study area:
1. Upland sagebrush
2. Grassland pasture
•
3. Riparian
4. Alfalfa field
5. Juniper
Transacts were 0.5 tan in length and were completely contained within the
vegetation type being sampled (Map 11-1, Appendix A) (see Results, page 31).
For the breeding bird census, a qualified observer paced each transact and
stopped every SOm to record all birds seen or heard during afive-minute interval
within 25m of the stop.
