We
drove the area in a 4-wheel drive Bronco in low range on Jeep trails much of
the time.
(1) Morrell Cow Camp and (?_) Stevens gulch:
The soils are mapped as Delson loam, 3 to 12 percent slopes in the Paonia
Area Soil Survey, January 1981.
One might get the impression from the narrative description that the stony
alluvium was laid in on nearly level grades. But the lay of the land is far
from that. There are small hills 20 to 26 feet in height with basaltic rock
and stones thru-out the delineated area of Delson Loam.
The vegetation consists mainly of Gambel oak, sage brush, service berry and
a good covering of native grasses and perennial weeds. Parts of the area are
dominated by the grasses, weeds and (orbs. The area has historically been
used for livestock grazing with winter deer and elk use.
The land is not suitable for cultivated crop production and no irrigation
water is available for supplemental irrigation. Spring snow melt does run
down across the low places. The rough topography, steepness of slope and
surface stoniness prohibit intensive cultivation on any major scale.
i•
,~~ s~, a~,...a~,~„ s-~.,«
scs ns-,
