THE MAP DOES NOT REFLECT THE EXISTENCE OF DECANT LINES
FOR EMERGENCY TAILINGS POND #3.
Refer to accompanying map for decant line location
for auxiliary Pond 3.
3. THE SETTLING PONDS AT THE EXTREME SOUTH END OF THE AREA
SHOW WHAT APPEARS TO BE A SPILLWAY TO THE ANIMAS RIVER.
CAN YOU CLARIFY THIS?
Refer to previous Response #6; at high water levels,
water from Settling Pond No. 3 is discharged to the Animas
River.
4. WHAT IS THE WATER QUALITY OF THE PONDS? ARE THEY LJ:NED?
~~ The settling ponds are not lined and contain mill
discharge water which has passed through the tailings pond
and been decanted at discharge po_irts OQ2 and 003, (See
Response #7.) The settling ponds were constructed to increase
retention time and aid in settling suspended matter.
Under the NPDES Permit, water entering the settling
ponds (at discharge points 002 and 003) is required to rieet
the effluent limitations of the Permit.
5.
