Dean Schipper, I checked the site
-_ ~i'for the proposed Gypsum mine on the Monroe Ranch. It will be operated by the ' '°
Colorado-Lien Company of Ft. Collins, in Section 32, R. 69W,, T. 11N., 6 P.Pt.. _.
.;'.:•;'-.' in Larimer County...; .. _~ .:' . >.;; ... ~
'The area to be mined will be approximately 10 acres. The overburden will be
removed and stockpiled and at the end of the mining will be replaced and '
,;. y.;,reseeded, as recommended by the SCS.
,i".,~;,
Presently, the area has an intermediate stand of Mountain i~tahogany with oc- _ .
".casional clumps of skunk bush. Also present are a few scattered yucca and
in the very strong gyp areas are a few clumps of bluestem grass. However,'
the lower area is grassed with gramma as the dominant species, with a good
- sprinkling .of various forbs. ••
' [7ildlife in the area are deer, rabbits, small rodents, coyotes, 'several species
of hawks, and on rare occasions, antelope. -
~'° Probably, the greatest impact~on wildlife would be the distruction of the ma- _ '
• hogany contained in the overburden. However, this would not be considered
as serious, as the deposit is on top of a dome and there is very little ~.,
utilization of the browse plants on top of the domes. Thie is due to the fact .
that there is excellent forage lower down in the draws, which also afford
~'; ..
.better cover, .' '
'. The mine will probably not be in operation for an extended period of years
'and should, therefore, be back in production in a few years. So the effect
on resideat.wildlife should be rather minimal.
There are no known threatened or endangered species in the area.
DS:lf
cc: Jim Brocanhall ,, .,
Colorado-Lien Co.
P.O.
