MOISTURE AND DENSITY DETERMINATIONS
Natural moisture contents were determined for all
soil samples tested in the laboratory and in situ unit weights
were measured for all "undisturbed" samples tested. Moisture
contents give a measure of the degree of saturation of the
subsurface soils and a measure of hvw far the natural moisture
content differs from the optimum moisture content determined in
compaction tests. Natural moisture contents are presented on
the boring logs and on the Summary of Soil Tests, Tables L-1
and L-2. In situ unit weights are presented on the swell-con-
solidation test results, the permeability tests results, and
on the Summary of Soils Tests.
UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
• These tests provide a direct measure of the uni-
axial strength of the soil. This value can be correlated with
shear strength to give a rapid estimate of parameters for
some types of stability analyses. Compressive strength results
are presented in Tables L-1 and L-2.
