• APPENDIX L
FIELD INVESTIGATION
AND
LABORATORY TESTING

LABORATORY TESTING
Representative soil samples were subjected to a limited
program of laboratory testing in order to aid in their classi-
fication and evaluation of their important engineering proper-
ties. The test results are summarized in Tables L-1 and L-2,
Summary of Soil Tests. The tests used are described below.
GRADATION TESTS
Sieve analyses were performed on selected samples to
determine the amount and size distribution of their granular
• portion. These tests assist in accurate classification of the
soils and enable a quantitative comparison of soils from dif-
ferent locations. The results of these tests are presented
on Plates 1-A and 2-A and 1 through 4, Gradation Test Results.
ATTENBERG LIMITS
A liquid limit (LL) and plastic limit (PL) were determined
for selected samples to enable accurate classification of silty
and clayey soils, and to assist in evaluation of their mechanical
characteristics. The results of these tests are presented with
the gradation test results.
