Elevation is 6,600 to 7,000 feet. <br />The average annual precipitation is 11 to 13 inches, the average annual air <br />temperature is 44 to 47 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 100 <br />Ge--Needs Variant gravelly sandy loam, S to 12 percent slopes. This <br />to 115 days. <br />Typically, the surface layer is brown gravelly sandy loam about 6 inches <br />thick. The subsurface layer is very gravelly loamy sand about 25 inches <br />thick. The upper 19 inches of the substratum is very gravelly loamy fine <br />sand. The lower part to a depth of 60 or more inches is very gravelly sand. <br />The soil is mildly alkaline. <br />This map unit includes soils on the terraces of lower Bernard Creek, <br />• <br />north of Cotopaxi, with buried peat layers at varying depths. Most of these <br />layers are about 5 to 10 inches thick. These soils were previously somewhat <br />poorly drained in some areas. The ground water table has been lowered 30 to <br />more feet by significant deepening of the creek channel in recent years. <br />The drying out of the buried peat layers has caused significant subsidence <br />of overlying soil lavers and could cause additional subsidence. <br />Permeability is rapid. Available water capacity is very low. Effective <br />rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is medium to rapid, and the <br />hazard of water erosion is moderate to very high. <br />This unit is used for rangeland. <br /> <br />
