AQUATIC AND WET~ND CONSULTANTS ~
LAURANNE P. RINK
PRESIDENT
JOHN T. WINDELL, PH.D.
VICE PRESIDENT
July 27, 1993
Mr. Terry McKee
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Tri Lakes Resident Office
9307 State Highway 121
Littleton, Colorado 80123-6901
Dear Terry:
On behalf of Southdown, Inc., I am hereby requesting authorization under Nationwide Permit N14 to
place approximately 280 cubic yards of fill material below the ordinary high water elevation of St.
Vrain Creek to facilitate construction of a new bridge crossing. The bridge will be 60 feet wide to
accommodate two lanes of traffic and the weight of 85 ton haul trucks. Due to the weight
requirement, an intermediate pier support must be constructed in the channel bed of St. Vrain Creek.
The location of the bridge can be described as occurring in Section 21 of T3N and R70W in Boulder
Couniy, Colorado (Figure 1). Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the bridge design in plan and cross-section,
respectively.
Wetland Avoidance
Wetlands within the project vicinity were mapped by Aquatic and Wetland Consultants, Inc. (AWC)
and verified by yourself as documented in your letter to me dated 25 January 1991. The location
of these wetlands is illustrated in Figure 2 and all occur outside of the road and bridge alignment,
At a field meeting of 1 ~ June 1993, you and I observed a wetland fringe which has recently
developed around the ordinary high water line at the proposed crossing location. As you will note
on Figure 3, the bridge abutments have been located on the high bank well above ordinary high
water in an effort to avoid wetland disturbance. Rip-rap will be placed around the edges of the
abutments, but will in no way be placed in adjacent wetland.
