2.05.4 page 5
August 2005
9(4)(a). The azea under stockpiled soIl will not require replacement of plant growth medium;
however, all areas disturbed by removal of plant growth medium will be reclaimed in the same
manner as described for mine disturbed area in Section 2.05.4.
Suitable plant growth medium should also be obtainable from the sediment ponds overburden
and embankment material. These soils have also been sampled and analyzed by the soils lab at
Colorado State University (See Appendix 9(4)(a)). Stockpiled soils (Subsoil Storage Area) are free
from contamination with stockpiled coal and are located so as to eliminate erosion of the stored soils
(See Map C-4). Reclamation of the permit area would commence at the end of the life of the mine.
RECLAMATION PLANT GROWTH MEDIUM
All stockpiled plant growth medium plus the suitable overburden/sediment pond material to be
used in reclamation wi21 be tested for the following parameters:
1. pH
2. Conductivity
3. Texture (particle size distribution)
4. Sodium absorption ratio
5. Saturation percentage
6. If pH is over 8, test will be made for selenium and boron.
7. Fertilization:
Nitrogen
Phosphorus
Potassium
8. Suitability as a plant growth material.
Plant growth medium shall be placed to a finished depth of 6 inches over all graded and
backfilled areas. Plant growth medium placement operations will be completed in conjunction with
processing backfill and grading operations to assure uniform distribution of plant growth medium
over all exposed areas. When backfill operations reach a maximum height of 10 vertical feet, plant
growth medium shall be applied to that slope area to within 2 feet of the top of the existing bench.
Brows or overhangs shall be rounded to conform to the existing surrounding terrain and plant growth
medium applied thereto.
The bulk of the fill for reclamation of the disturbed mine azea will be produced by re-
contouring the slopes in such a manner as to leave on the surface those materials determined to be
most easily amended to satisfactory plant growth. Additional soil will be taken from a borrow area in
the east drainage area below the plateau (Topsoil Borrow Area). For a description of this material
and explanation of source and intended disposition see Section 2.04.9 and Appendix 9(4)(a).
Coverage of the permit area with plant growth medium for re-seeding and plant growth will be
as follows:
Location Soil Depth
Access road and areas not to be reclaimed: None
Pond Area (Area 1)
None (except material found during
reclamation)
Lower Facilities Area (Area 2)
None (except material found during
reclamation)
