The
area where waste material from your mine operation will be placed has the
following species for vegetative cover: Needle and thread, bluegrass
species, cheatgrass, bluegrama, curleycup gumweed, sunflower, ponderosa
pine, currant bush and several other miscellaneous species. Basal
density is 20 to 30 percent.
As much waste material as possible should be left underground. The
• rest of the material when placed on the surface should be placed so
the slope does not exceed 3:1. When the revegetation effort begins,
the top soil that has been previously saved should be evenly spread
over the area. The top soil should be tested and fertilizer and other
additives should be added to develop a good medium for plant growth.
If you wish to gather seeds from various plants in the
the area, it is advisable to collect enough seed to ap
pounds per 1000 square feet. The area should be raked
be placed in the ground 1/4 to 1/2 inches. The seeded
mulched with two bales of weed free hay for every 1000
This hay should be crimped into the soil to keep it in
area to revegetate
fly more than two
so the seed will
area should be
square feet.
place.
If you do not wish to gather seed but want to buy it, a recommended seed
mixture is:
ecies Percent Lbs/Acre*
Bluegrama 20 .6
Western wheatgrass 50 8.0
Needle and thread 30 4.5
*(Lbs/Acre is for Pure Live Seed)
A berm should be placed on the road below the mine to stop any water that
might soak through the waste material. If water is running through the
material from above, a ditch should be developed to divert the water away
• from 'the waste material.
Sincerely,
~ .~,~
v Richard J.
