5.2 Preventative Maintenance
Preventative maintenance (PM) programs will be developed and maintained by the
Manager of Plant Maintenance. The PM programs will include more than mechanical
maintenance on process equipment. Procedures such as visual checks of material
storage containers and piping, testing of containment structural integrity, observations
of housekeeping, inspections of fire extinguishers, chemical inventory, and restocking
spill containment materials will also be included in the PM program.
5.3 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSsI
The manufacturers of hazardous chemicals will provide MSDS to American Soda.
American Soda will review hazardous ingredients; PPE, handling, and storage
requirements; spill response recommendations; and disposal regulations. This data will
be provided to all American Soda employees in a comprehensive training program.
Furthermore, as required by EPCRA Section 311, American Soda will provide copies of
MSDSs to the local fire departments and other outside responders. Hazardous chemicals that are not compatible with each other (i.e. strong
acids and strong bases) will not be stored together.
Unleaded gasoline and diesel storage tanks will be constructed of appropriate materials
and will be installed on bermed concrete areas. The volume of the bermed area will be
sufficient to contain the volume of the largest storage container.
5.5 Labeline
Manufacturers of hazardous chemicals are required to label their products
appropriately, which means hazards are clearly listed as well as emergency phone
numbers. If incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals have damaged labels,
American Soda will re-label containers as needed. In instances where American Soda
transfers a material from the original container to another container, [~lational Fire
Protection Association (NFPA) labeling will be implemented. NFPA labeling includes
ratings for health, fire, reactivity, and specific hazards.
If hazardous wastes are generated on site, labeling of waste containers will follow the
requirements outlined in 40CFR Part 262.
