• extended from 2880 through 1945. Eleven (11) mines are known to have
operated in the mine and adjacent areas. The largest mines in this area
produced coal from the upper seams in the Vermejo Formation with a number
of relatively small mines operating in the same seams currently being
mined by the Southfield operations.
Table 3, Previous Mining Operations - Mine Area, presents known
information including mine names, seam mined, period of operation, mining
methods, and total production for area mines. Location and extent of old
mine workings have been determined from mine maps and other information
obtained from the Colorado Division of Mines and other sources. This
information is presented on the Mine Area Surface and Groundwater
Hydrology Map, (Map 12).
Within the mine area, the surface disturbance area, as delineated on the
Mine Surface Facilities Map, (Map 18), is utilized for mining operations.
All other areas within the mine permit and adjacent areas are utilized as
• undeveloped rangeland and wildlife habitat.
Loadout Area
Prior to establishment of the adjacent town of Florence, Colorado,
construction of the AT$SF railroad spur, and initiation of Loadout
activities, the Southfield Loadout and adjacent areas were utilized as
undeveloped rangeland and wildlife habitat. With development of this area
wildlife was displaced, however, rangeland use has continued on
undeveloped areas to the present.
There has been some development of areas immediately to the east of the
Loadout for residential/commercial use. Generally, this development has
occurred concurrently or subsequent to initiation of Loadout operations.
Limited areas to the south and west, adjacent to the Oak Creek drainage
have also been upgraded through irrigation to improved rangeland, pasture
land, or hay cropping uses.

2.04.3-3
