commonly been observed during bird surveys for other projects in the
region. A goshawk was observed in the area during one of the surveys, but
no active or inactive nests were found during the nest site surveys. There are
waters suitable for the northem leopard frog in the project area, but none of
the ponds or water sources will be affected by the proposed operations.
No federally listed Sensitive species would be affected by activities
associated with the proposed exploration program.
There are 13 Management Indicator Species (MIS) listed by the USFS for
the GMUG, which were addressed. Habitat is lacking for 7 species
including: Rocky Mountain and desert big horn sheep, Abert's squirrel,
Lewis' woodpecker, Gunnison sage grouse, Pinyon jay and Colorado River
cutthroat trout. Of the remaining 6 species mule deer, elk and bears are
common throughout the area. American marten and northern goshawks are
known to occur in the general vicinity. A goshawk was observed flying
through the area during one of the surveys. Hairy woodpeckers were
observed on several occasions. Most of these observations were made while
traveling to and from or between sites. The limited amount of habitat to be
• disturbed should have no effect on use of this area by hairy woodpeckers.
No Management Indicator Species would be affected by activities
associated with the proposed exploration program.
There will be small amounts of habitat affected and changes in vegetation
patterns could actually be beneficial to some of the above listed species as
well as other non-listed species.
FINDINGS
Site FFF
Habitat Survey
This site is south of Forest Development Road (FDR) 711 about 300 feet. It is
located on a gentle westerly-northwesterly aspect in a stand of mature aspen
(Populus tremuloides) timber with scattered sub-alpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) and
Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmanii). Elevation is approximately 8550 feet.
Snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundifolius), chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) and
