HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC.
r 1
L_J
2.5.1 Sampling Sites
Under advisement of Terry Schulz, Environmental Specialist of Northern
Coal Company, three sites were selected for study on Curtis Creek and two sites on
FF Creek. Sites were selected to be just downstream of previously constructed
water quality testing stations on both creeks. Each macroinvertebrate sampling site
was marked with an erect reinforcement rod to aid in locating the sites in future
monitoring surveys.
Site CC-1
This station was located on Curtis Creek, 3 meters downstream of a weir
approximately 50 meters below the southern sediment pond at the Rienau No. 2
• (G-Seam) Mine. The creek at this station flowed through a well defined channel
about 2 feet in depth. Vegetation grew down to the banks of each side of the
stream. The substrate was primarily sand, clay, with some gravel and chips of shale.
Flow velocity was moderate at this site.
Site CC-2
This station was located on Curtis Creek north of the Rienau No. 2
(G-Seam) Mine portal and south of Northern No. Z (P-Seam) Mine and Northern No.
3 (J-Seam) Mine portals. The creek at this station flowed through a channel about 1
foot in depth. The channel was not as well defined as CC-1. Vegetation grows along
both banks of the stream. There was a growth of sedges on the channel substrate.
The substrate consisted primazily of sand, gravel, and pieces of small cobble. Flow
velocity was moderate at this site.
•
L-9
