• and ibises, for example, would be generally limited to marshy wetland
areas which do not exist on or near Yoast.
No federally-listed threatened or endangered mammals occur 1n the
Yoast area. The wolverine (Gulo gulo), listed as endangered by Colo-
rado, is the only state-listed species potentially occurring in the
region. While historic and potential range of the wolverine includes
the mountains of north-central Colorado, this species is likely extir-
pated from the area. Wolverines are wide-ranging, and in some western
states the species appears to be on the increase (Wilson 1982). It is
possible that individuals may pass through or reoccupy the region at
some point in time.
The only other listed species observed by PRES was a peregrine
falcon (Falco pere9rinus), encountered on 10 August 1993, as biolo-
• gists were driving from the study area to Hayden in the evening. The
bird was hunting along Sage Creek Road several miles northwest of the
Yoast permit area in NE/4 Section 23, TBN, R88W. After capturing a
small bird, the peregrine perched on the ground in a fallow field and
consumed its prey. The peregrine is federally-listed as endangered,
and listed by the state of Colorado as threatened.
•
53
