and shrubs on the dike. The drainage below the pond 1s ephemeral, and •
had little to no standing or running water by June. There is little
brushy cover along the drainage.
Bald Eagle and Northern Goshawk
Two observations each of bald eagles and northern goshawks were
made in 1993. The bald eagle is on the federal and state endangered
species lists, while the goshawk is a candidate (FC2) for federal
listing. Both bald eagle sightings, one in mid-April and one in mid-
May, were northeast of the permit area in SE/4 Section 4. In each
case, an adult eagle was flying over or perching near Nofstger Reser-
voir. Bald eagles have been known to nest and winter in the wooded
bottomlands along the Yampa River, but no suitable breeding habitat
for this species exists on or near Yoast. Occasional sightings would •
be expected in the area year round.
Goshawks would also be expected to be sighted occasionally year
round. One was observed in mid-February flying over the permit area
in NW/4 NW/4, Section 20. An immature was seen in late June just off
the permit area in SE/4 NW/4, Section 29. It is possible, but not
very likely, that goshawks might nest on or near the Yoast permit
area. Habitats at Yoast attracted numerous nesting Cooper's hawks,
but goshawks generally prefer to nest in more heavily forested areas.
Other Species of Interest
At least some potentially suitable habitat exists on or near
Yoast for most of the other species given on Table 13. However, a few
of the species that might occur in the Hayden area would not be found
in the vicinity of Yoast due to lack of appropriate habitat. Bitterns •
52
