• surface discharge, without any indication of delayed response in
the groundwater system.
5.1.4.6 Soils
Soils information is not available for Alkali Creek, but soils in
this area should be similar to those north of the hogback, except
possibly sandier.
5.1.4.7 Subirrigation
Subirrigation along Alkali Creek is limited to land immediately
adjacent to the creek. Vegetation outside the active channel
receives its water from surface irrigation and/or by precipitation.
5.1.5 South Canyon Creek
5.1.5.1 Unconsolidated Sediments
Because South Canyon Creek is perpendicular to the structural
fabric of the area, as opposed to being parallel as are Alkali
Creek and the Colorado River, the geomorphic characteristics of
this drainage are quite different than the other two drainages.
The valley of South Canyon Creek is relatively narrow and steep-
sided. The widest portion of the valley is in an area of Mancos
Shale, which is easily eroded. In contrast to the other two
drainages, alluvial sediments along South Canyon Creek are
relatively thin, narrow, and discontinuous in areas of exposed
bedrock. Because of their limited extent, alluvial contacts were
not drawn on Figure 5.1-1.
5.1.5.2 Monitoring
Because this drainage is outside any planned disturbed areas,
. monitoring has not been required.
NCEC - Coal Ridge #1 5-7 ABC/1145/900301
