3-33
3.9.6 REVEGETATION
• For this plan involving reclamation of the existing disturbance, most of the area to be
revegetated will be in the juniper woodland p.3 acres). The edges of the road (1.50 acres)
and a small area (0.8 acres) where the road transitions from the valley floor to the canyon side
is in the Big Sagebrush community. Unfortunately, the juniper woodland wilt not be safe to seed
with equipment. Reclamation of the road will block access to the area. Therefore, the juniper
woodland will be broadcast seeded with the mix shown in Table 3.4-1a, and mulched afterward.
Prior to mulching, a chain drag or other method will be used to work the surface and enhance
seed cover. ff the slopes are greater than 3:1 netting will be used to stabilize the mulch. In
both cases, mulch of native hay or clean straw will be applied at the rate of 3,000 pounds per
acre.
In accordance wrth BLM requirements, the mulch used shall be certified weed free by the
Colorado Deparbnent of Agriculture per Federal Register Vol. 61, No. 143, July 24, 1996. A
copy of the 'Transit Certificate" shall be submitted to the BLM and approved prior to the use of
• the mulch. ff the mulch is grown outside of the state of Colorado, BLM shall be contacted and
the state inspection program shall be identified. BLM must approve the state inspection program
methods and receive proof of inspection by that program prior to using the mulch.
The Big Sagebrush community encompasses 2.3 acres of the area to be reseeded. The
edges of the road will not be recontoured but will only be chisel plowed and disk harrowed prior
to seeding. The recontoured area near the base of the upper road also has slopes that are
typically shallow and will be drill seeded. The surface of this recontoured area will be ripped rf it
was compacted by vehicle or equipment traffic but the seedbed will be left rough to enhance the
moisture retention in the area. Mulch will be applied at the rate of 2,000 pounds per acre and
then crimped into the seedbed. The seed mix listed in Table 3.4-1b will be applied. Fnally, the
area will be mulched with an additional 2,000 pounds per acre of native hay or clean straw.
•
M~ Volume I 12 - 18 - 96
