INVENTORY INFORMATION
Site Location:
The Powell Rock Pit is located in the NE1/4 of Section
9, T3N, R103W. It lies approximately 600 feet north of CO
HWY 40, 3 miles east of the town of Dinosaur in Moffat
County. See attached location map.
Soils Information:
The proposed pit area is comprised of approximately 85~
soil map unit 133, Torriorthents-Rock outcrop, shale complex
30-758 slopes. The remaining 15~ is comprised of soil map
unit 91, Eghelm loamy fine sand, 0-3~ slopes. See attached
soils map and map unit description for more detailed soils
information. Inclusions of significantly different soils
may be present within map unit boundaries.
Vegetative Information:
The site was field investigated in February 1995, and
therefore a complete vegetative inventory of existing
vegetation was not possible due to snow cover. The
disturbance by previous mining activity has altered the
native plant community on portions of the site. See the
attached Range Condition Inventory (CO-ECS-2) for the
existing vegetative information that was collected. Soil
map unit 91 is correlated to the Saltdesert Overflow range
site. Soil map unit 133 is not correlated to a specific
range site. See the attached range site description for
information on the potential plant community of the area.
RECLAMATION RECOMMENDATIONS
To obtain the best possible reclamation results, the
top 12-18", or whatever topsoil is available, should be
removed prior to mining and stockpiled separate from other
material. Broadcast seeding of the topsoil stockpile with
pubescent wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, and possibly
yellow sweetclover is advised, especially if reclamation
will not take place for several years. This will help to
reduce erosion of the stockpile, and more importantly will
reduce or prevent the establishment of noxious weeds.
Following mining activity, the area should be graded
and shaped to the desired contours, preferably with no
slopes steeper than 2 1/2:1. Topsoil, if available, should
be spread out over the area, and then ripped deep enough
