<br /> <br />The Lazear series is a mar~Uer of the loarr,y, mixed <br />(calcareous), mesic family of Lithic Ustic '1'orriorthents. Soils of this <br />series are shallow, well drained, and rtedium-textured. These soils have <br />formed in thin, calcareous medium to moderately tine textured sediments <br />weathered frexn interbedded shales, loamstone, and sandstone. They <br />occupy the rtnderately steep to steep upland mesas associated with <br />sandstone breaks and outcrops in the La Plata County area. <br />Typically, the upper part of the surface layer of the Lazear <br />soil layer is brown stony loam about 5 inches thick. 'fhe lower part of <br />the surface layer is light yellowish brown loam about 4 inches thick. <br />The underlying material is vex'y pale broom loran that overlies sandstone; <br />bedrock between 15 and 20 inches. <br />Pexrneability is iroderate. l;ffet t.ive x•ooti[,g depth is 10 to~U <br />• <br />xrw hes. Available water capacity xs low <br />S[rx•face runoff xs noderate <br />and exr~sxon hazard is moderate. <br />1'he typifying pedon for the Lazear series reported by the Soil <br />ebnsexvauon Services follows: <br />Typifying Pedon: Lazear gravelly loam -grassland (colors ax•e <br />for dry soils unless otherwise noted). <br />Al 9-4" - Light brownish gray (lOYR 6/2) gravelly loam, <br />dark grayish brown 10 YR 4/2 rtoist; moderate fine <br />granular structure; eft, very friable; 15 percent srt~all <br />sandstone fragments; calcareous; rtnderately alkaline (pH <br />b.2); clear smooth bowtdary.
