PROGRESS REPORT
LANDSLIDES AT MOUNT GUNNISON MINE
SOMERSET, COLORADO
FOR MERRICK AND COMPANY
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
Merrick and Company is currently designing surface struc-
~ Lures and facilities related to a proposed ARCO underground coal
~I mine located in the town of Somerset, to the south of the North
~ Fork of the Gunnison River, approximately eight miles east of
Paonia, Colorado.
I'
Geotechnical investigations performed at the site in 1976 by
i International Engineering Company ("Foundation Investigation Re-
iport, Proposed Coal Preparation Plant, Mount Gunnison Mine, Somer-
~~set, Colorado", dated December 1976) indicated that an area in
'the northern part of the property was an old landslide:.Several
(structures and facilities of the proposed mine are currently
':!being designed within the old landslide; they include the mine
portal cut for the mine's five entries and the mine access road.
I'. Additional structures may also be located within the same area.
GEO-HYDRO Consulting, Inc., was retained by Mezrick and
Company to conduct a geotechnical study of the landslide area to
evaluate the effects of the landslides on the proposed cons-
truction. Our investigation has been conducted in several phases;
this progress report presents our evaluation of the landslide
area and of the expected construction problems.
I. 1.2 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
I The scope of Phases 1 and 2 of our study was to delineate in
more detail the extent and depth of the existing landslides; to
evaluate their character and, if possible, to estimate the
reasons for the landslides. The study was also to assess, in
OWITpD[ONGi,W K
