ENVIRONMENT <br />18. General Topographic Setting: Rugged foothill ridges north and south of IvTinnesota Creek <br />Current Land Use: grazing and recreation <br />19. Flora: Gambel oak, serviceberr}t, chokecherry, snowbesy, grassesc, and (orbs, phrsstands of <br />Doughrs fir and asprA on north-facing slopes and on the slopes of gulches <br />20. Soils/Geology: Eme to medium fine brown sandy looms with localized sandstone ou6cmps_ <br />Most of the sediments are residual or slope collrrvinur with tatrty narrow <br />bands of poorly consolidated alluvium in drainage bottoms. <br />- 21. Grromrd Visibr7ity: Svrtace vistbili[y is generally good m excelle8t (60 m 90 percent). 'Thee <br />are small m patchy areas of thicker rmderg[owth and leaf litter where <br />visibility is reduced to fair to good (30 to 50 prrcent). <br />22. Comments: <br />The Ldter areas include several portions of the low, gently sloping area between Minnesota Creek <br />Road and the staked location for Shaft 4_ <br />v. LITERATURE REVIEW <br />23. Previous Survey Activity <br />In the project area: A 1979 block survey for an oakbrush bran ovedapped with the eastern <br />edges of both sazvey blocks_ In addition there have bees seven surveys that included <br />numerous small irregular blocks and access coaidms in the areas around the survey blocks. <br />The latter surveys included well pads, core holes, methane drainage wells, ponds and trails, <br />and an enlargement of the Mrmesota Reservoir spillway. <br />In the general region: Surveys in the general region away from Ure North Fork Gunnison <br />River valley have been similar m those irr the immediate project area Sruveys >a the river <br />valley have also inchrded surveys for highway improvements and mine facilities. <br />25. Known Cnllural Resources <br />In the project area: A small number of isolated &Hric artifacts aad small &thic sites have been <br />found ~ the project vicinity, principally along the floor of the Minnesota Creek valley This <br />includes SGN1103 found at fire northeast edge of the Shaft 4 sorveyblock. The location of <br />this azlifact has been obliterated by improvements m Mimnesota Creek Road. <br />In the genazal region (s~marize): Resources found in the g~aal region have included <br />widely dispersed prehistoric artifacts is drainage valleys, segments of irrigation ditches, <br />stock camps, fence remnants, and other features associated with hismric stock grazing Tn <br />
