Eahibit B Site Description
The project site is located in Huerfano Count}• in the south eastern portion of Colorado. The topography
in this area is relatively level rangeland known as Bustos Flat. This area generally slopes toward the
Cucharas Reservoir which is located a ro matel} 5 miles north of the proposed quarry. Walsenburg is
located approximately 10 miles to the west. Ground Elevation is approximately 6000 feet above
Sealevel. Rainfall averages approximately 16 inches per year.
This rangeland site relativel}• level and is bisected by arroyos. Limestone outcrops are common on the
side of the arro}•os. Vegetation consists of Blue Granuna grass, Red 3-awn, Ring Muhl}•, and scattered
cedar and Pinion trees. At the quarry site the dominant vegetation is the sparse Blue Grammy Grass.
The arroyo at the site is approximately 30 feet wide at the bottom and 3 feet deep. Rock outcrops of
limestone and Shale are exposed on the side of the arro}•o. The existing vehicle access is up the bosom of
the arro}•o on an unimproved road approximatel}• 2800 from County Road 211.
The soil on the level azea of the site is classified as Penrose-Minnequa complex b}' the United State
Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. The penrose soil is shallow and well drained. It is
formed Prom residium and colluvium derived dominantly from limestone. The surface soil layer is pale
brown loam up to 7 inches thick. Below this is 10 to 12 inch layer of shale. Below the shale at a total
depth of approximately 20 inches is fractured limestone rock. the limestone is layered and readily splits
along the layers. The soil is moderately alkaline.
The site is used as range land and has been grazed by cattle and sheep since settlement in the early I800's
Past grazing and clearing activities on the site have included removal of trees and sage brush. There are
no manmade structures within 200 feet of the proposed quarry and none are planned as part of this
application.
The main drainage feature is the arro}•o. This arro}•o is subject to intermittent seasonal water flow. Past
range activities have included construction of earthen berms across the arroyo to catch the stormwater
runoff and provide stock watering facilities. The nearest of these catchments is well away and upstream
from the proposed Quarry.
Wildlife in the area is limited. There is some use by deer and some birds. Minimal impaa on wildlife is
anticipated.
