eh
ESPEY, HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC.

Because of limited areal extent, access and thickness at the outcrop and
proximity to the major seams, it can be demonstrated that these beds are not
commercially recoverable in conjunction with the mining proposed herein.
Total in-place coal resources for the five seams planned for mining and
included in the application aze estimated at 289 million tons. Northern Coal
Company estimates that (recoverable) coal reserves from the five major seams
equal 63.3 million tons. Details of the coal resources in the other coal seams aze
not presented in the application.
2.4.2 Coal Mines
Two small abandoned underground coal mines aze located on the federal
lands leased to Northern Coal Company. The Miller Mine (SE'/.SW'h, Sec. 29 T2N,
• R93W) was first opened in 1911 on a local 9-foot thick coal in the Iles Formation.
There is no record of a federal lease during the time the Miller Mine was in
operation. U.S. Conservation Division (USGS) lease files indicate the lands were
first leased as D-040358 to C.C. Mather on July 7, 1930, with the former Miller
Mine operated as the R.G. Rienau Mine. Due to the condition of the coal bed (quite
dirty), the lessee was unable to compete with other mining operations and
subsequently applied for relinquishment of the property. Relinquishment was
granted on September 30, 1932. The coal lands were later included in federal coal
lease C-076713, which was issued Februazy 1, 1966.
Total production from the mine during the period it was known as the
Miller Mine is not known; but it was obviously quite small in view of its described
size (Hancock and Eby, 1930). The R.G. Rienau Mine recorded coal production for
the period January, 1929 to February, 1931 totalled 175.4 tons. The size of the
underground mine as of October 27, 1931 (last record) consisted of approximately
0.54 acres. Room-and-pillaz mining was used throughout both periods of operation.

F-18
