. 3.0 SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
3.1 STTE LOCATION
Trapper Mine is located at 25910 S. Highway 13 in Moffat County, Colorado, 6.3 miles
southwest of Craig and east of Colorado Highway 13. The latitude/longitude coordinates of the
Trapper office are N40° 25.00', W 107° 34.15'. Trapper Mine is surrounded by open range lands
and wildlife habitat. A vicinity map and a site map are provided as Figures 1 and 2, respectively.
3.2 GENERAL FACILITY AND PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Site Description
Trapper Mine is categorized by Standard Industrial Classification {SIC) Code 1221. Trapper
Mine is a surface coal mine that operates on a pernvtted area of more than 10,300 acres. Mining
operations are conducted along the northern flank of the Williams Fork Mountains to recover
multiple seams of high quality, low sulfur, subbituminous coal for delivery to the adjacent Craig
Station power generating facility. Elevations at Trapper Mine range from approximately 6,300 to
• 7,400 feet above mean sea level. The average annual precipitation is 16.7 inches, with about
one-third of this amount from snowfall. Site soils are well developed, generally deep and formed
in alluvium, and colluvium derived from sandstone and shale parent materials. Topographically,
cultivated lowlands give way to rolling upland hills and long steep slopes historically utilized as
rangeland and wildlife habitat with steeper slopes occurring in the higher elevations.
MlninP and Reclamation Operations
Surface mining operations commenced at Trapper in 1977. Conventional dragline mining is
utilized for stripping overburden from the coal seams. Three Page 752 LR draglines (32 cu yd
buckets) operate concurrently in different areas of the mine. Coal is loaded into large {95 ton)
haul trucks with hydraulic excavators/shovels. Coal is hauled drrectly to the Craig Generating
Station, where it is used for the production of electricity. Reclamation consists of ,grading the
overburdern (or spoil), replacement of topsoil, and revegetation with a mixture of grasses, forts,
and shrubs
