We are happy
to provide this information to you. If we may be of further ass-
istance please feel free to contact us.
The area proposed for excavation has one major soil and inclusions
of a small amount of steep soil on the East Boundary. Descriptions
of the soils and their characteristics can be found on the attached
sheets.
The climate Precipitation averages 20-25" per year. Over one-
half comes as snow. Growing season is from May 15 to July 15.
The Topography Elevation is approximately 6700'. The slopes
range from 9-15~.
The vegetation Ttlere are two distinct plant communities on the
proposed excavation area. The area north of the fence is non-
irrigation pasture. Intermediate wheatgrass, along with timothy
and smooth bromegrass make up 85% of the production by dry weight.
Other plants found in this pasture are big sagebrush, Kentucky
Bluegrass, dandelion, western yarrow, and a few annual weeds.
The ground cover was estimated to be 1800 pounds of air dry
forage per acre. The area south of the fence is mostly in an
old excavation. The plants are mostly weeds such as Canada
thistle, Russian Thislte, cheatgrass, tarweed, prostrate knot-
weed, and dandelion. There is some western wheatgrass, big sagebrush
rabbitbrush, and a very small amount of sueetclover. The ground
cover density is about 10% with production being about 200 pounds
per acre. There is a small wet area on the southern boundary of the
area which is also an old excavation; the plants found in it are
cattails rushes and sedges.
Sincerely,
~-la~ Vn.[est,u,~./ cc:file
John Valentine, District Conservationist enclosures
O Tne Soil Conservation Service SCS-AS-2
U ~s an agency of lne 7D_7g
Department of April Ull ure
