The Interpretations can be used as a guide to planning more detailed
Invostlgatlons and for avoiding undesirable silos for an Intended use. fay
using the soil map and interpretations, It Is possible to select sites that
have the least Ilmitatlons for an intended use.
Many somewhat poorly and poorly drained soils have severe or very severe.
Ilmitatlons in their natural condition. These soils, when drained artiflclally :'
may only have a Sllght Ilmitatlon. Modern equipment and knowledge make it
possible to overcome most of the Ilmitatlons of Bolls for mony urban and~re-
creatlonal uses. The degree of the Ilmitatlon and the location of the soli will
determine the practlcablllty of developing the soli for the intended.use. No
consideration was given in these interpretations to the size and shape of soli
areas, nor to, the pattern they form with other soils on the landscape, For
example, same very desirable soil areas are too small In size or too Irregular
In shape, or their occurrence with less desirable Solis forms .a pattern tea
complex to be utilized for the intended use. Although not considered In the
Interpretations, those Items should (nfluonco the final selection of n site.
Local roads and streets. Tho Ilmitatlon rating given In this column apply to
~,, ~. uae of soils for construction and maintenance of improved local roads and streets
that have all-weather surfacing--commonly of asphalt of concrete--and that are '
' expected to carry automobile traffic all year. Soils are rated for their~follow~
Ing sultabllities: (1) soil dra(nago class, (2) fLooding, (3) slope, (4) depth
to bedrock, (5) ASSHO and unified soil classes, l6) shrink-swell potential, (7),
susceptibility to frost action, (f1) stonlnoss and rockiness class.
Shallow excavations. Those excavations require excavating or trenching to a
depth of 5 or 6 feet. Note that Ilmitatlon ratings for shallow oxcavatlons
alone, though highly relevant, are insufficient for Interpretations for ulti-
mate uses, such as for dwellings with basements, sanitary landfills, cemoterles,
and underground ut(Iity linos--sewers, pipelines and cables.
In soils used for shallow oxcavatlons, desirable characteristics are good work-
ability, moderate resistance to sloughing, gentle slopes, absence of rock out-.
crops and big stones, and no flooding hazard,.
