;:.
• - 3 - •
Sett Reaction - Sotl reaction or the intensity of soil acidity or alkalinity is
expressed in pH---the logarithm of the reciprocal of the k-!on concentration.
A pH of 7 Is neutrol, lower values indicate acidity and higher values show al- '
~, kalinity. •
w~
}t~ Shrink-Swell Potential -Indicates the volume change to be expected of the loll'
t~ material with changes in moisture content. y ~.

~
*;~ Potential Frost Action - Potential frost action Is the possible upward or later-:
;',.~ al movement of soli by the formation of Ice lenses and the subsequent collapse
upon thawing. '
.II~
',,~ SUITABILITY OF SOIL AS SOURCE OF SELECTED MATERIAL AND FEATURES AFFECTING USE .,:
:!
:~+ Topsoil - Soll as a source of topsoil is rated on the balls of the character-
~`~~ istics and thickness of the surface Solt, difficulty of obtaining the material, °.
`;'~ .and prosenCO of gravel and cobbles. 7hreo ratings are recognized: good; fair.:,.:
and poor. Those ratings are intended for use Dy nurserymen, landscape archl-
facts, highway engineers, and others concerned with estnblishing vegetation to
cover slopes, road shoulders, waterways, lawns and golf course, and where ever..
suitable soli material is needed to establish vegetation. Tho soil Is rated '
from the surface down to a minimum of 8 inches.
Distance from area of intended use, and presence of weeds, Boll-borne diseases .•.
and Insects, and relation of the characteristics of topsoil to those of the site.
where It Is to be used Is not considered In this classiflcatlon. These are
Important factors to bo considered in on-site evaluation of a potential source .•. ;.
of topsoil. ..
Sand and Gravel - The ratings are based on the probability that soils generally
' contain sizable quantities of sand or gravel. Soft materiels, such as shale
or slltstone, are not considered sand end gravel for these lnterpretatlons.
To qualify as a good or fair probable source, the layer of send or gravel must
be at least 3 feat th(ck.
Some soils have little or no sand or gravel in the uppermost 5 or 6 fe9t.. Yet,
from observations made and fran knowledge of local geology, that some lolls are
~' _ underlain by sand and gravel is an ostabllshod fact. Therefore, sumo areas .
rated poor as a source of sand or gravel may have a source of sand or gravel
that was not indicated !n the soil survey.
Road FIII - The ratings in this column pertain to suitabillty.of soils as a
source of road.flll. Slnca soft survey intorprotatlons are oriented to local
roads and streuts rather than to superhighways, such as those of the Intorsteto
• system, the assurrptlon Is that the suitability ratings in this column are
evaluations of the soils as sources of road fill for low embankments, generally
less than 6 feet high and loss exacting In cieslgn than high embankments.
Thu ratings, good, fair, and poor, reflect how wall a soil performs after It Is
removed from Its original location and Is placed in a road ombankmnnt elsewhere.
