' 4.4 Model Calibration
In order to calibrate the model to actual conditions, mapped and reported water levels in the vicinity
of the mine were reviewed. WMI initiated a ground water level monitoring program in 1994, and
has recorded water levels monthly in 38 piezometers and rivo neazby wells in recent years. Mapped
water levels were provided by RMC for December, 1996. These water levels were confirmed based
on measured water levels. Model inputs included the elevations of general head boundaries, stream
' water levels, and drain elevations. These elevations were input into the model, and the: model was
then ran at steady state conditions. The resulting modeled water level elevations were compared
' with mapped water level elevations from December, ]996. Adjustments were made to the model
inputs until the configuration of the modeled water levels closely matched that of the me.~,sured water
' levels, as shown in Appendix P. At this point, the model was considered calibrated to steady state
water levels.
4.5 Pre-Mining Simulation
' Following model calibration, an additional simulation was performed to represent conditions prior
to commencement of mining the new areas included in the amended permit. Tt~e additional
' simulation included additional mining at the Miller Pit, operated by WMI and locates' as shown in
Figure 1; this pit was not existing at the time of the 1996 water levels, but will be completed prior
to the start of mining under the amended permit. Tlvs additional simulation was considered the "pre-
mining" simulation, and was utilized as the basis for comparison of water level changes resulting
from the mining and post-mining simulations for the amended permit. Appendix ~ presents the
water levels resulting from this simulation.
' 4.6 Model Results
' Model outputs include water levels and a volumetric flow budget for each simulation. Water levels
' resulting from the mining and post-mining simulations were compazed with water levels from the
-16-
' ' lfi.;dop~Unr.diu .I ;tnnrm:~. Air.
