State Rect.
irrigation. •
The Office of Surface Minim Reclamation and Fhforcement (OSMRE) has
develope,9 a listing of livestock and irrigation water use standards
compiled from the most stringent standards recormnended by a variety
of organizations (e.g., USEPA, Wyoming Department of IIZVironmental
Quality). The OSMRE starxjards for livestock and in-igation water
used are listed in Tables 7-92 and 7-93.
Since both Grassy Creek and Fish Creek waters are used for livestock
watering, water quality data from all Seneca II Mine surface water
sites were compared to the OSMRE livestock standards; the results of
this comparison are shown in Table 7-94. In general, water quality
at the Grassy Creek and Fish Creek sites is chemically suitable for
livestock use since the majority of the livestock standards
excursions were minor exceedences of the upper pH limit of 8.5
(S.U.). The only other livestock standards exceedenCPC were total
recoverable aluminum measurements on 05/13/91 at Sites 11 and 13, .
both located along Fish Creek. A review of the data record shv,~s
that these are the highest aluminum values ever recorded at these
sites. These high aluminum values are most likely attributed to the
relatively high suspended solids measurements seen at these sites on
05/13/91, because a stream's suspended solids conq~onent is primarily
clays (i.e., aluminum silicate minerals). Since Site 11 is located
on Fish Creek upstream from Seneca II Mine dischaxcles, and no other
surface water sites show elevated aluminum values on 05/13/91, the
aluminum exceedences at Sites 11 and 13 cannot be attributed to the
effects of mining activities at the Seneca II Mine. Plots of pH and
total recoverable aluminum values are provided iri Appendix 7-4B for
those surface water sites with measurements exceeding the livestock
standards for these parameters.
Unlike Grassy Creek, Fish Creek waters are also used for irrigation.
However, it is important to note that Bond Creek and Cow Canq~ Creek
are not directly used for irrigation and that discharcJes from these
tributaries only potentially affect the irrigation suitability of
7-318a Revised 12/02/93
