Two ponds are contemplated in the course of mining
• operations. First, there is the area designated as the
"Green Pond" as I on Map A-1. This pond ccllects water
emanating from old mine workings and impounds the same,
permitting natural purification and settling of suspended
solids. Second, there is a small sedimentation pond located
south of the Green Pond which captures overflow from the
Green Pond as well as surface runoff from disturbed areas in
the coal handling vicinity and permits natural settling of
suspended solids and purification. An NPDES permit has been
obtained permitting the discharge of water from this small
sedimentation pond.
// Additionally, there is a stream channel diversion
conduit which handles snow runoff and precipitation surface
water flowing down Coal Gulch and diverts the same south of
the excavations and coal handling areas and discharges the
water near U. S. 160. This diversion conduit is indicated
by a dashed line on Map A-1. The diversion conduit will be
constructed in such a manner that coal fines and other
surface runoff material will not contaminate the stream
channel conduit. _
~.~ i
The coal handling area indicate as III on P4ag A-1 is
approximately 150 feet x 400 feet a -~s=ad-}ae~t to U. S.
Highway 160, The area is presently being used for screening
• and stock piling coal recovered in the course of surface
excavations for the main portal and surface plant. There is
a mobile office at the site. The gulley, which traversed
this area, has been filled and rerouted along the west side
of the handling area to the southern edge of the property
where it turns east and connects into the small settling
pond. The handling area slopes gently to the southeast.
Much of it is covered with 8 to 12 inches of coal debris to
provide a firm path for storage and handling of coal. After
the surface excavation work is finished, the area will be
used for waste and coal refuse from the underground opera-
tion. The area will then merge and blend into existing
waste terraced areas to the east forming a continuous elevated
area.
21. Reclamation Plan. In general, the plan of reclamation
for the affected area will begin almost as soon as the mine
is constructed and in production. It will largely consist
of terracing, leveling and contouring waste areas and prepar-
ing the same for planting of vegetations that will survive
best in the surrounding environment.
[4aste material will be dumped in waste areas earlier
designated. The material will be leveled and will undergo
compaction and surface disintegration by trucks and dozers
working the material. During the long period of mine opera-
. tions, it is expected that experimental work can be undertaken
- 13 -
