• The Satanka series are moderately deep soils developed on
moderately sloping uplands over calcareous shales and sandstones.
They are well-drained with medium runoff and moderate permeability.
They are either sandy loams or light sandy clay loams.
Typical pedon, Satanka fine sandy loam:
Al (0-2") - Brown (lOYR 4/3) fine sandy loam, dark brown (lOYR
3/3) moist; weak fine crumb structure; soft, very friable,
nonsitcky and nonplastic; many fine and very fine roots;
neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary.
B1 (2-6") - Light yellowish brown (lOYR 6/4) fine sandy loam;
yellowish brown (lOYR 5/4) moist; moderate medium sub-
angular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky
and nonplastic; common fine and very fine roots; few dis-
continuous clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 7.3);
clear smooth boundary.
B2t (6-15") - Yellowish brown (lOYR 5/9) fine sandy loam, dark
yellowish brown (lOYR 3/4) moist; moderate medium prismatic
structure parting to subangular blocky; hard, firm, sticky
and plastic; common fine roots; slight effervescent in
lower part of horizon; many, thick clay films on faces of
• peds; neutral (pH 7.3); clear smooth boundary.
Baca (15-24") - Brown (lOYR 5/3) sandy clay loam; dark brown
(lOYR 4/3) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting
to weak medium subangular blocky; hard, firm, sticky and
plastic; strongly effervescent; few fine and medium irreg-
ular soft masses and threads of secondary calcium carbonate;
few fine and medium roots; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear
smooth boundary.
Cca (29-36") - Pale brown (lOYR 6/3) sandy loam, brown (lOYR
5/3) when moist and crushed; weak moderate subangular
blocky; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly
plastic; violently effervescent; common medium irregular
soft masses and seams of lime; few medium roots; mildly
alkaline (pH 7.6).
Range in characteristics: Depth to the base of the argillic
horizon is 15 to 30 inches. Depth to visible lime accumulation is
10 to 20 inches. The texture in all horizons ranges from sandy
loam to sandy clay loam. Depth to bedrock is 20 to 40 inches.
`J
-8-
