2
g/m lbs/ac, and kg/ha.
woody Plant Density. The density of shrubs and trees by species per unit area will be
estimated. Shrub and tree establishment areas will be delineated and sampled separately
from the general reclaimed units. Values will be presentetl as #/plot, #/ac and #/ha.
Species List. A list of all species observed during sampling will be developed. Common
names will be included, as will life form, origin, and longevity. The initial species list
will be upgraded in subsequent monitoring efforts.
Sampling Methodologies.
Cover. Cover will be measured by the point-interc apt method. The point-intercept
transact will be at least 25 meters long with a minimum of 50 points taken.
Production. Production data will be collected by the harvest method. All herbaceous
2 2
vegetation occurring within the vertical projection of a 7/2 m to 7 m plot will be
harvested as discussed in Sampling Parameters.
2
woody Plant Density. woody plant densities will be measured in a 1 m x 50 m (50 m
)
2
quadrat in the reference area and generally a 2 m x 50 m (100 m ) quadrat in the
revegetated areas. Larger or smaller quadrats may be used in reclaimed areas depending on
area to be sampled or specific sampling goals.
Species List. The species list will be developed both from spring flora investigations
and from information gathered during peak groui ng season sampling.
Sampling Intensity. Because of the varying degree of disturbance or size of reclaimed
areas from year to year, a size dimension of a reclaimed area cannot be specified.
Therefore, a minimum of one (t) sample for each ten (10) acres of reclaimed area will be
located in each block of reclamation or until sample adequacy (if required) is achieved.
A particular block will be identified by year of seeding. Sampling locations will
generally be established through the use of random point selection. This method may be
modified when it becomes apparent that a more even distribution or allocation of sampling
points would be desirable, particularly if the reclamation block is split into a number of
subunits. Since the monitoring date is intended for evaluation of revege[etion stands end
73-33 Revised 01/15/93
