Mr. Robert A. Lucero
Las Animas County Planning and Land Use Office
August 6, 2004
page 2
findings of Mr. Carrillo, and Ms. Sehan Dwells, a professional prehistoric
archaeologist. Their findings are summarized on page 3 and include the
following quotations:
"...survey and site recording revealed no evidence of "burials".
"...presumed groundstone artifacts at Temporary Site...were
naturally produced"
"Temporary Site 04.VTP.02 did represent a prehistoric site and
was recorded..."
"One linear site...20th century trail or wagon road...is not
considered eligible to the NRHP/SRHP and no further work is
recommended.
"All observed cultural remains have been examined, and recorded
as outlined above. Clearance of the Valco T Pit project is
recommended.
Valco Inc. has fully investigated the possibility of an "Indian Burial Ground" on the
property and concluded that (1) there are no observable grave sites on the
property, and (2) that the nature of the property itself does not lend itself to being
an "Indian Burial Ground". Further, the identified historical sites are minimalist in
nature, have been properly recorded, and should offer no impediment to
proceeding with pit process. The existing nearby gravel pits east, north, and west
of the proposed Valco T Pit have, apparently, not posed a historically significant
problem in the past.
Please schedule us for a re-hearing on this matter as soon as possible and advise
Tom Brubaker of the schedule.
Sincerely,
~ `~~
A, Reid Jones
Vice President -Finance
ARJ:pc
enclosures
