BOX 550 <br />ROCKY FORD, COLOR,4D087087 <br />(719j 254-7484 <br />FAX (719j 254-7468 <br />In response to the protests raised concerning the Valco T Pit containing an "Indian <br />Burial Ground", Valco has taken the following actions: <br />1~ Requested a recommendation from Jim Green, Compliance Coordinator of <br />the Colorado Historical Society as to an archaeologist with training and <br />experience suitable for the investigation and identification of "Indian Burial <br />Grounds". He recommended Mr. Richard F. Carrillo of La Junta, Colorado, <br />- wfiom we retained and whose professional resume is enclosed. <br />C <br />On July 17, 2004, Mr. Carrillo issued The Results of a Class 111 Cultural <br />Resource Survey of the Valco T Pit which is enclosed. Please especially <br />note the section entitled "The Indian Burial Grourid" on page 3 which <br />includes the following quotations: <br />"The Class III survey revealed no evidence of a Native American <br />burial site..." <br />"... the empirical evidence and professional knowledge both tend <br />to suggest a high probability for burials not being present on the <br />VALCO T Pit property". <br />Mr. Carrillo's report of July 17 described two prehistoric Native American <br />sites and remains of a historic road system that he recommended should <br />be further investigated and recorded prior to pit construction. Valco <br />authorized Mr. Carrillo to undertake the investigation and recordation. <br />4. <br />A Letfer Report Outlining fhe Results of a Class III Cultural Resource Site <br />Recording at the Valco T Pit was issued on August 5 which includes the <br />ROCKY FORD LAMAR TRINIDAD WALSENBURG RATON GUNNISON CRESTED BUTTE <br />
