Box 221
Boulder, Colorado 80302
Dear Jay,
On August 15, 1981, I visited the Bourg Property and examined the vegetation
along Mann Draw and the other drainage which crosses the site. Specifically.
I was looking for areas which may support subirrigated vegetation. There
is no evidence that any of the vegetation along either of these two drain-
ages is subirrigated. The vegetation along the draws is composed of a
big sagebrush shrubland type which is essentially the same as that which
grows on the uplands adjacent to the drainages. There are no grassy
meadows or grass-lined channels. The sagebrush is continuous from the
uplands on one side of the drainage to the uplands on the other. The
whole area consists of undeveloped rangeland.
'. I also visited the Load Out facility at North Gate on August 15, 1981,
The original vegetation at this site was probably a shrubland type
dominated by silver sagebrush (Artemisia canal. The original vege-
tation has mostly been removed or altered by past activities at the
site. There is a road which crosses the entire area, and there is
evidence that the site has been used in the past as a stockpile site
for shipping coal. Old coal fragments occur over parts of the site.
Currently, much of the area supports only a sparse cover of vegetation.
Based on observations adjacent to the permit area, the original vegetation
was probably dominated by silver sagebrush, rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothammcs
nauseosus), big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), and western wheatgrass
(Agropyron smithii), The vegetation is similar to that on the Bourg
property, however, the presence of silver sagebrush and rubber rabbitbrush
make it somewhat different in that the type is likely to be more
productive than the vegetation on the mine site.
If you have any questions about either of these two sites, please give
me a call.
Best regards,
Warren R.
