' Plant Community Survey
' Map Area No. 1
Map Area No. 1 has been disturbed by previous mining activities and
' includes roads, various old mine rock dump piles, pits, prospects, cleared
ground and other related disturbances. Bare ground is common. Annual
species, such as cheatgrass and various annual forbs, are common. Other
grasses and forbs, with a few trees and shrubs are present between the
' areas disturbed and are invading the historic disturbance. The type and
density of vegetation depends on the extent of the historic disturbance.
Map Area No. 2
Map Area No. 2 primarily surrounds the old mining-related disturbances
' on the east side of the ridge and is characterized by shrubs, grasses,
forbs and scattered trees. The ground cover ranges from 0 percent where
bedrock is exposed, to about 30 percent. The trees range from 8 to 20 feet
in height with 3 to 8 inch diameters at breast height.
Estimated 9 of Total
' Species Composition
Overstory 30 - 60
' Shrubs/Trees
Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) 70 - 90
' Skunkbush Sumac (Rhus trilobata) 5 - 15
Traces: Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperous virginiana),
' Ponderosa Pine (Pious ponderosa), Plum (Prunus
sp.), Gambels Oak (Quercus gambelii) Wax Current
(Ribes sp.)
Understory 40 - 60
' Grasses
Annual Bromes (Bromus spp.) 10 - 30
' Poa
Western Wheatgrass (Poa spp.)
(Agropyron smithii) 5
2 - 20
- 10
Dry Sedge (Carex spp.) 2 - 10
Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis) T - 5
' Junegrass (Koeleria sp.)
