1
1
1
1
Exhibit B - Site Description - Vegetation Information
The affected area exists at an elevation of between about 6,150 to
6,250 feet and is transitional between the grasslands and lower foothills
vegetation zones. The site consists of slopes with easterly exposure and
relatively open ground. Shrubs, grasses and fortis dominate the vegetation
community. Virtually all of the immediate area has been extensively
disturbed by activities related to former mining operations. Much of the
site is covered by old mine rock dumps, trenches and pits, old foundations,
working and storage areas, refuse, and roadways.
The site was walked in September of 1988 and visual estimates were
made of the composition of the plant community. Figure B, included with
Exhibit B - Site Description - Soils Information, is a soils and vegetation
map illustrating the location of various plant communities. The vegetation
types are distinguished as map areas Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Map areas Nos. 1 and
2 apply to the permit area. Map area No. 3 is adjacent to, but outside of,
the permit area. These map areas were defined on the basis of composition
of the plant community which includes relationship to slope, aspect, soils
and level of historic disturbance.
In an undisturbed condition, native vegetation in the plant community
would include the following species.
Grasses and Grass-like Plants
Fortis
Woody Species
Western Wheatgrass
Big Bluestem
Sideoats Grama
Little Bluestem
Griffith Wheatgrass
Dry Sedges
Needle-and-thread
Blue Grama
Fringed Sage
Spiderwort
Penstemon
Hairy Golden Aster
Yarrow
Buckwheat
Milkvetch
Larkspur
Mountain Sunflower
Rky. Mtn. Juniper
Mtn. Mahogany
Chokecherry
Wax Current
American Plum
Skunkbush
Ponderosa Pine
Pinyon Pine
Gambel Oak
