West Elk Mine
Stream Quality
The current stream water quality monitoring program is summarized in Table 9 and the
monitoring locations are shown on Map 34. As a result of Technical Revision No. 54 (TR-54),
water quality monitoring of surface stations in the Minnesota Creek drainage were reduced until
mining progresses into that azea. For new stations or those at which monitoring is reinstituted,
water quality data will be collected following the baseline monitoring schedule outlined in Table
10. After baseline data have been collected for one yeaz, monitoring will continue on a seasonal
basis, with annual, full-suite laboratory analyses for approximately five yeazs and then the sites
will be sampled for limited laboratory analyses, as more completely presented in Section 2.05.6.

•
Table 10
B line o it in Sc edu
onth Flow Field Param C emical An I sis
Ja
Februa
March
A ril '
Ma
Jun
Jul
Au us
Se tember ' '
Bober
Novemb r
D tember
Note:
1. Sampling of spring will not be done during winter conditions or when access is difficult.
MCC has selected the baseline water quality pazameters in Table 11 for routine measurement to
chazacterize the water. Water quality changes that result in conditions that aze known to mobilize
metals would likely cause iron or manganese to be released in detectable quantities. Additionally,
changes in conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) indicate changes in water quality that may
need to be further investigated. As a result, monitoring of these selected pazameters will provide a
detection system for potential mining-induced changes in water quality. Therefore, once full suite
analyses have been collected at a site for at least five years, these indicator pazaments (pH,
conductivity, TDS, TSS, and iron) will be collected on an annual basis.
Analyses are completed as outlined in the Guidelines for Collection of Baseline Water Quality and
Overburden Geochemistry Data (CDMG 1982). Results aze reported in the Annual Hydrology
Reports. If not already provided in the AHRs, baseline data will be provided to CDMG prior to
longwall mining under or within the angle-of--draw of a monitored resource. A summary and
discussion of water quality data collected from surface water monitoring stations is shown in Table
17 and the accompanying text.
2.04-87 Revised November 2004 PR70
