Care
will be taken to avoid putting materials with leachable
toxic substances in drainageways. Sides of the pit or pits
will then be graded to 2:1 or 3:1 slopes using a bulldozer.
'
After the pit sides have been graded, stored topsoil will be
' spread over. the surface at a depth of at least 6 inches,
compacted lightly and, if necessary, scarified to insure a
desirable seedbed for germination and seedling establishment.
Scarification also provides for water retention, increased
t infiltration and seed coverage.
' Revegetation
Both food and shelter requirements for animals will be
1 considered in the vegetation plan to fulfill the principal
' post-mining use of the site, which is wildlife habitat. A
diversity of plant species, including shrubs, fortis and grasses
will be planted. Selection of these species for reclaiming
small land areas in the pinyon-juniper association not occupied
by trees are based on recommendations by Plummer, Christensen
' and Monsen (1968), Cook, Hyde and Sims (1974), United States
EPA (1975) and Parrill (1977).
`~'

E-2
1
