NONTECHNICAL SOILS DESCRIPTION REPORT
Rocky Mountain Materials - Schnurr, Stephen J.
•
Map Soil name and description
Symbol
The Midway soil is shallow and well drained. It formed
in residuum derived from shale . Typically, the surface
layer is very gravelly clay loam 3 inches thick. The
upper 4 inches of the underlying material is clay. The
lower part to a depth of 15 inches is extremely shaly
clay. Weathered shale is at a depth of 15 inches .
Permeability is slow. Available water capacity is very
low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches .
Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of erosion of
unprotected soil by water is high. This soil has high
shrink-swell potential .
The Cascajo soil is deep and excessively drained. It
formed in gravelly and sandy alluvium. Typically, the
surface layer is very gravelly sandy loam 6 inches
thick. The upper 15 inches of the substratum is
extremely cobbly sandy loam. The lower part to a depth
of 60 or more inches is extremely cobbly sand.
Permeability is moderately rapid to rapid. Available
water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 60
• inches or more . Runoff is medium to very rapid, and
the hazard of erosion of unprotected soil by water is
moderate to very high.
108 Shingle loam, 3 to 20 percent slopes
The Shingle soil is shallow and well drained. It
formed in residuum from interbedded shale and
sandstone . Typically, the surface layer is loam 4
inches thick. The underlying layers are loam 8 inches
thick. Shale is at a depth of 12 inches . Permeability is moderate . Available water capacity is very low.
Effective rooting depth is 4 to 20 inches . Runoff is
slow to very rapid, and the hazard of erosion of
unprotected soil by water is slight to very high.
128 Wiley loam, Cool , 2 to 6 percent slopes
•
