sag=brush dominates on deeper, .Wore loamy sits along drainageways. Grass occurs
on the shallow ridgetop sites and in disturbed sites,
At lower elevations, soils have developed primarily from alluvium with s•nall
areas of aeolian deposits on lee sides of ridges. These soils are mostly deep
with grass, sagebrush-grass or sagebrush-greasewood vegetation types.
Sagebrush-greasewood is indicative of higher levels of sodiwn concentration.
A pattern of grazing use has been superimposed on the natural schane. fhe result
Was been soil erosion and alteration of vegetation communities. 'Minter sheep
grazing has resulted in overuse of south and west aspect sites 'with subsequent
deterioration resulting in invasion of annual grass and 'weed species. Another
• consequence is the resultant erosion wnich has ranoved the upper 2 to 6 inches
of topsoil in many locations. This material has bean redeposited on valley-filling
fans as a thin surface cap. Prairie dogs have brought subsoil to the surface
in a number of locations. 'The disturbance brought by shaetwash inflow and high
prairie dog populations has served to provide media for annual grass and weed
invasion of the deeper soils as well as shallow sites.
•
II.I-5
