• REPORT OW
ALLUVIAL AQUIFER TESTING
AT THE SITE OF
SNOWMASS COAL COMPANY'S
PROPOSED UNIT TRAIN LOADOUT FACILITY
LOCATION
The test hole was drilled at the site of the proposed water supply well for
the loadout facility, as shown on the Base Map, Drawing No. SK-050580-TDP,
included with the permit application.
DRILLING METHOD
The test hole was installed on May 20 and 21. 1980 by Golder Eagle Drilling
Company, using a Portadrill drilling rig. Two air compressor units were
• used. a rig-mounted unit and a 750 cfs Gardner - Denver unit. In the course
of drilling operations, coarse-grained alluvial material was encountered
throughout the length of the hole. requiring the use of unconventional drill-
ing methods. Air drilling was supplemented by infection of gel and foam to
keep the hole open. When this procedure was no longer feasible, drilling
progressed through a series of successively narrower metal sleeves, which
were driven down in advance of the drill stem. In this fashion. the first
27 feet were drilled with a 7 7/8" bit. Another 20-foot section was drilled
with a 6~," bit before the hole collapsed. Below 47 feet, the circulation of
ground water made drilling by these methods impossible.
The depth to the water table was measured to be 36.3 feet on May 22. Two
nearby domestic wells were also measured on this date; the water level at
the Wise residence was a~easured to.be 4D. 35 feet white the depth to water
at the chuck residence was 29.1 feet (refer to Exhibit 2).
During drilling, a lithologic log was kept as shown in Exhibit 1. A water
. sample was taken for laboratory analysis. The occurrence of water in the
hole was aanitored but, because of the gel and foam used in drilling, it
